Steve Moore, owner of Warrnambool’s “Boat-Friendly” Warrnambool Holiday Park hit Lake Bullen Merri today in his Anglapro Stealth and had a great day:
“First time trip to Lake Bullen Merri today after living here for six years and after so many good reports, I called in sick to go fishing! I picked one spot and didn’t move – 11 meters of water I started a burley trail of very small pieces of pilchards and used pilchard tail strips for bait on a no. 4 short shank hook, 1m of 10lb leader to the swivel and small pea sized sinker. Drop to the bottom and wind up 1-2meters, fish were also on the surface.
A few small fish where taken until one big fish was taken and thats how the next 4 hrs played out. There are many small 30cm fish about so bagging out is not a problem but if your after big fish just play the catch and release game until the big fish move in. The big fish won’t come all at once like the smaller fish so be patient. Make sure you take your landing net, the new rubber type like what Hookem have to protect the very fine scales of the fish.
Plenty of boats where also trolling, great safe boat ramp, plenty of parking and rubbish bins provided around the area – pity people dont use them instead of over flowing one bin (lazy people). Its a beautiful place lets look after it.”
