Round 10 of the Hobie Kayak Bream Series was held down on the Hopkins river last weekend. 68 anglers from all around the country competed in some of the best spring conditions Warrnambool could offer. Unfortunately with the fish still in spawn mode and the estuary remaining low, the Bream had more on their minds than chewing. 96 fish were weighed in over the weekend and it was great to see quite a few cracking fish over a kilo and up to 1.39kg making their way into anglers bags. Tackle Shacker Dyl Pace fished the tournament and placed a respectable 13th. Big congratulations to 16 year old NSW young gun Cullen Di Mattina who took out the weekend with his 5 fish bag for 3.68kg. It’s great to see large scale events such as the Hobie Kayak Bream Series come to the South West and we can only hope to see it return next year! Of note lures such as Daiwa Double Clutch 60’s, Cranka Crabs, Atomic Cranks and Jerk Minnows, along with the usual Zman Slim SwimZ and GrubZ caught the bulk of the fish during the tournament. With the estuary beginning to warm up the Bream will really begin to fire over the next two weeks as they finish up their annual spawn.
